Toyota Fortuner Persian Carpet Floor Mats, 3 Pcs (2016 - 2026)

A three-piece carpet mat set cut for the second-generation Toyota Fortuner, covering the 2016 pre-facelift model through the facelift and the Legender. The top is a Persian rug pattern in blue-grey with gold medallions, and every edge is finished in black binding. In the box are a driver mat, a front passenger mat and one wide mat for the second row. Most people buy it because they want the cabin to feel warmer and more like home than it does on plain black rubber.

The pile catches grit off people's shoes and holds it down in the fibres, so it never gets to the Fortuner's own floor carpet. Underneath, an anti-slip backing grips the floor so the mat stays where you put it. The black binding matters more than it looks. Rug-style mats without it start fraying at the cut edge, nearly always at the driver's heel, and once a thread goes the pattern unravels from there.

What the three pieces cover

Something owners only notice after a few weeks: the driver mat takes almost all the wear, and it wears in one spot, the patch under your right heel. On a car driven daily in city traffic that heel keeps pivoting between brake and accelerator hundreds of times a day. The binding and backing on this set hold the edge together, but the pile in that spot will flatten before the rest of the mat does. That is normal for any carpet mat and it doesn't mean the set is faulty.

What it cannot do and where it does not fit

• The Fortuner seats seven and this set stops at the second row. If you regularly carry people in the back row, their feet land on factory carpet. Ask at the counter whether a matching third-row piece is available.
• Carpet soaks up water. Get in with wet shoes on a monsoon day in Lahore and the mat holds that water, and in August humidity it can take days to dry inside a closed car. Left damp, it starts to smell. If your Fortuner goes to the farm, the dera, unpaved village roads or up to Naran in the snow, a rubber or 7D mat that wipes clean is the better buy.
• These are cut for the 2016 - 2026 floor. They are not listed for the first-generation Fortuner (2016 - 2026), and the Hilux Revo takes its own mats even though the two share a lot underneath.

How to fit it

1. Take the factory mats, or whatever mats are in the car now, completely out.
2. Vacuum the floor carpet first. Sand left under a mat gets ground into the car's carpet every time someone puts their foot down, and you won't see it until the mat comes out a year later.
3. Lay the driver mat. Push it forward into the footwell, then press the brake and the accelerator all the way down by hand and check that neither pedal touches the mat edge at full travel.
4. Lay the passenger mat the same way.
5. Slide both front seats fully forward, lay the rear mat with the joined section over the middle of the floor, then flatten it and slide the seats back.
6. After a week of driving, check the driver mat again. If it has crept forward toward the pedals, pull it back and look at whether anything under it (a coin, a pen, a folded parking slip) is lifting one corner.

The mistake we see most is laying the new mats on top of the old ones to "double up." It feels thicker and cosier. It also lifts the driver mat and takes away the anti-slip grip, because the backing is now sitting on another mat instead of the floor. The whole stack slides forward under braking, and the front edge can ride up behind the accelerator and hold it down. On a 2.8 diesel Fortuner that is a real problem. Always take the old mats out.

For cleaning, pull the mats out, give them a shake and vacuum both sides. For a spot, use a damp cloth with a little mild soap and then let the mat dry flat and completely before it goes back in. The boys at the car wash will want to put the pressure jet on them. That drives water right through to the backing, and the mat then needs a full day or more in the shade before it is dry enough to use.

Mostly Fortuner owners who use the car as the family car in the city and want the inside to look less like a showroom and more like their own drawing room. A busy rug pattern also hides a day's dust far better than plain black carpet, which shows every grain of sand.

The second group bought their Fortuner used. By five or six years old the factory mats are usually worn through at the driver's heel or missing altogether, and fresh mats are the cheapest way to make a used car's cabin look cared for.

It is also a common gift for someone who has just taken delivery of a new Fortuner or Legender, since it is one of the few things you can buy for the car without knowing the owner's taste in wheels or lights.

If the car spends its weekends on dirt roads or at the farm, choose rubber or 7D mats instead. If you want the boot and third row covered as well, this set alone will not do it.
