Before choosing a key cover, put your key next to the product photo. Count the buttons and compare the shape. Two keys carrying the same car badge can still need different covers.

A cover and a shell are different purchases

A cover goes over the existing key. A replacement shell takes the place of its casing, with the original electronics moved across where compatible. If the case is cracked but the remote still works, check the shell options before looking for a whole new key.

How The Materials Feel

PVC silicone is soft and grippy. Metal shells give a heavier feel, with a silicone cover included on some versions. The black KIA Sportage leather cover includes a keychain ring. For a keyring alone, there are slim metal-and-leather, crystal and diamond-style designs.

Protection Without Changing The Key

A cover puts a layer between the casing and the other things in your pocket or bag. It may help with everyday knocks, but it isn't a guarantee against damage. A keychain can make the car key easier to pick out from house and office keys.

A replacement case is useful when worn buttons or a broken shell are the problem. It won't repair faulty electronics simply by giving them a new housing.

When To Change It

Look for splits around the button openings, a loose blade or a casing that no longer closes properly. Replace a stretched silicone cover if it keeps slipping off.

Shape, Buttons And Blade

Check the model, year and button layout against the listing. If a shell includes a blank blade, it may need cutting. Compare the original key carefully and ask before ordering if the inside layout or blade fitting is unclear.

Moving Into A New Shell

1. Open the original key carefully without damaging its contents.
2. Note the circuit board and battery positions.
3. Check for a separate transponder chip and keep it safe.
4. Have the components transferred into the compatible replacement.
5. Test locking, unlocking and starting before putting the old shell aside.

The small transponder is easy to miss. A remote can still operate the locks while the car refuses to start if that chip has been left behind. Use a key specialist if you're unsure.
